Rural Sports, John Gay

Deluxe limited edition of John Gay’s sporting poems, number 91 of 225 copies, of which 200 were offered for sale, with all illustrations colored by hand and the frontispiece signed in pencil by Gordon Ross. First published in 1713 and dedicated to Alexander Pope, Rural Sports celebrates fishing and the chase. It is joined here by The Birth of the Squire and The Hound and the Huntsman , with Ross’s lively illustrations and Frederic Warde’s typography making this a particularly handsome edition.

New York: William Edwin Rudge, 1930. Introduction by Owen Culbertson. Publisher’s full purple leather, boards decorated with geometric blind tooling, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge gilt; xxviii, 36 pp. A nice copy, with a firm binding, sunning to the spine, light wear at the corners, and tape ghosting to the endpapers.
