Spit in the Ocean, Numbers 1-5
First editions, first printings of the first five numbers of Ken Kesey’s freewheeling countercultural literary journal, with issue 1 being signed by Kesey to the first page. Published intermittently, each number featured a new theme and guest editor while continuing Kesey’s Grandma Whittier narrative. The sequence comprises “Old in the Streets,” “Getting 2 There From Here!,” “Communication with Higher Intelligence,” “Straight from the Gut,” and “The Pyramid Issue.”
Pleasant Hill, Oregon: Intrepid Trips Information Service/SITO, 1974–1979. Five octavo volumes, perfect-bound in original illustrated wrappers and illustrated throughout in black and white; Number 5 with its folding plate of the Great Pyramid. Very good overall, with tight bindings. Number 1 has creasing to the front wrapper and a closed marginal tear to the signed opening page, which is also creased; Number 2 retains postal sealing tape from its original mailing and has small losses at the spine ends; Number 4 shows light fading or scuffing to the rear wrapper; and Number 5 has a light front-wrapper crease. The first two numbers retain their addressed mailing wrappers. A consecutive group of the first five numbers, scarce signed.
