The Collected Works of Ambrose Bierce

Deluxe Autograph Edition of Bierce's collected works, limited to 250 copies signed by Bierce. This set is out of series and numbered, with each volume signed by Bierce (the regular limitation copies are only signed in volume 1). Four volumes are signed in pencil, the remainder signed in blue ink. The prolific American writer and Civil War veteran was renowned for his sharp political commentary and his mysterious disappearance in 1914—two years after the publication of Volume XII of The Collected Works. "There is something terribly beautiful and fitting in the manner of the passing of Ambrose Bierce... Soldier-fighter and soldier-writer. Scotson Clark's well-known caricature of Bierce dragging a pen from a scabbard is the undying portrait of the man” (Starrett). Bierce’s legacy endures, with his work adapted, referenced, or fictionalized across a wide range of media, including comic books, films, novels, plays, and television.

Octavo, contemporary 3/4 green morocco over cloth, lined in gilt, five raised bands to spine, lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, green endpapers, half-titles, frontispiece portrait of Bierce reproduced from a lithograph by F. Soule Campbell, decorated title-pages designed by Frederick Polley. All volumes in very good or better condition. Bindings remain tight, sturdy and square. Spines a touch sunned, light general shelfwear with a few corners just starting to fray, a handful of nicks to boards and a few small stains, rubbing to top edge gilt. Internally clean. A very attractive set, rare with each volume signed.
