The Dance of Death, Hans Holbein

An evocative 1811 edition of Holbein’s Dance of Death, with 25 etched plates, including David Deuchar’s illustrations in elaborate architectural borders incorporating skeletal figures and emblems of mortality. The plates include an engraved French title dated 1786, a portrait of Holbein, and a procession accompanying the concluding account of John Lydgate’s Dance of Macaber.

London: Printed for B. Crosby and Co., by John Jackson, Louth, 1811. Brown textured cloth, rebacked with the earlier gilt-lettered spine laid down; 32 pp., plus preliminaries. Binding firm, light general wear and scattered marks to the boards, with rubbing at the extremities and some loss at the foot of the retained spine. Engraved title/frontispiece loose but present. Scattered foxing, toning and offsetting to pages, plates remain quite clean. Complete.
