The Dance of Death, Hans Holbein
A compact nineteenth-century adaptation of Holbein’s Dance of Death, pairing wood engravings of Death among people of every rank with biblical quotations and explanatory text. The title-page attribution to “Mr. Bewick” has long been questioned.
London: William Charlton Wright, 1825. Compact volume, measuring approximately 4 × 6 inches. Bound in black half leather over gray-green marbled paper boards, the smooth spine lettered and dated in gilt, with gilt rules at the ends. Wood-engraved frontispiece and an illustrated sequence numbered I–LI, ending with “The Last Judgment”; printer’s mark on the verso of the final leaf. 26 pp. of introductory text, followed by the unpaginated illustrated section. Rubbing and scuffing to the boards, edges, and leather extremities, with wear along the joints and at the head and foot of the spine; binding firm. Scattered foxing and age-toning throughout, heavier on some leaves, with offsetting from the illustrations.
