Fourth edition of this practical Georgian manual to the construction and use of pocket drawing and calculating instruments, including the plain scale, sector, protractor, and related devices. Webster explains both the instruments themselves and their application to geometry, surveying, navigation, and other mathematical problems.

London: Printed for H. Woodfall, J. Rivington, L. Hawes and Co., R. Horsfield, S. Crowder, T. Caslon, T. Longman, J. Pritchard, C. and R. Ware, and W. Nicol, 1768. Octavo; contemporary full brown calf, covers ruled in gilt, spine in six compartments with five raised bands and a morocco lettering label; pp. [viii], 61, [1 ads]. Illustrated with four folding engraved plates: an unnumbered instrument plate facing the title and Plates 1–3 at the rear. All four required plates are present; Plate 2, however, is missing a portion of its lower section. Binding rubbed and scuffed, with minor cracking along the front joint, boards bowed. Contents toned with traces of foxing and soiling. Folding plates creased as usual, with Plate 2 defective as described. Early ownership inscription of Charles Apelquist, dated 1782, on the title page. A later presentation inscription on the second blank, dated 1825. An appealing survival of an uncommon eighteenth-century working manual.
