Matthew Prior and Charles Montagu


First edition of Prior's satirical response to Dryden's The Hind and the Panther, written in collaboration with Charles Montagu, first Earl of Halifax. This is Prior's first printed work and a great example of the pamphlet wars occurring in England at that time.

London: Printed for W. Davis, 1687. Bound in 3/4 calf over marble boards, gilt titles to spine; pp. (vi), 6. Leaves cut a little close, no text lost. Title page appears to have benefited from professional restoration with handwriting ascribing the text to Montagu, scattered foxing and a couple small stains internally. Boards show light shelfwear.
