First edition, first printing with the publisher's imprint on copyright page in serifed type in upper and lower case letters, 'H' in Monarch on page 51 undamaged (Bienvenue & Schmidt, p. 208). Originally published in 1899 as 'A New Wonderland, Being the First Account Ever Printed of the Beautiful Valley, and the Wonderful Adventures of Its Inhabitants,' the book was reissued in 1903 with a new title in order to capitalize upon the alliterative title of Baum's successful 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.' The book is only slightly altered—Mo is called Phunniland or Phunnyland, but aside from the last paragraph of the first chapter, they are essentially the same book. Scarce in the first printing.

Indianapolis, IN: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1903. Publisher's original light blue cloth, lettered in navy blue and white, pictorial cover label, pictorial endpapers; pp. [8], 237. Illustrated with 12 color plates and numerous in-text black and white drawings by Frank Verbeck. In good condition. Binding remains sturdy and square, expertly rebacked with minor loss to the original spine ends, general shelfwear and rubbing to boards with a few areas of discoloration, a bit of staining to edges of text block. A few stains to endpapers with the flyleaf chipped at edges and an owner's name penned. Scattered thumb smudges, closed tears and partially erased pencil notations throughout. Protected in a removable archival jacket.
