The Moon Hoax, after Richard Adams Locke
An early Spanish version of Richard Adams Locke's celebrated 1835 Moon Hoax, translated anonymously from the expanded French adaptation. Published as Publicación completa de los nuevos descubrimientos de Sir Juan Herschel en el cielo austral y en la Luna, the work presents imaginary lunar discoveries as the observations of the distinguished astronomer John Herschel. Its account describes the Moon's inhabitants, their dwellings, marriage ceremonies and religious customs, with a preface on the habitability of other worlds. A curious example of the hoax's rapid circulation beyond the United States.
Cádiz: Imprenta Gaditana, a cargo de D. F. Pantoja, 1837. Plain paper wrappers; 115 pp. Very good, with light wear and soiling to the wrappers, splitting along the spine folds, a small corner chip and a faint, partly erased pencil notation to the front wrapper. Small blue-green marks at the inner margin of the title page; otherwise internally clean.
